Airlines invest heavily in the surge of sports-related travel

Airlines Capitalize on Sports Travel Boom

On October 10, fans will witness a thrilling college football matchup as the Indiana University Hoosiers take on the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers in Lincoln, Nebraska. United Airlines is stepping up to cater to this fan frenzy by introducing rare nonstop flights between Indianapolis and Lincoln, which typically do not have direct service.

Unique Flights for Major Matchups

United Airlines isn’t stopping there—it will also offer unusual nonstop routes such as Eugene, Oregon to Columbus, Ohio for a highly anticipated University of Oregon vs. Ohio State University game. Southwest Airlines and American Airlines are also joining the efforts, each launching special flights to transport sports fans, including a dedicated flight from Dallas to Rio de Janeiro for an NFL game.

As noted by Joe Esposito, Delta Air Lines’ chief commercial officer: “The local market in sports is so popular right now, and so much money is being spent.”

The Rising Cost of Sports Travel

In 2025, fans spent $51.1 billion traveling to spectate sporting events, a number that is likely to increase with the recent surge in interest. In Austin, for example, sports-related travel accounts for one in every six hotel room nights.

Travel adviser Rose Gray reveals the latest trend in fan travel: it’s no longer about just attending the game; fans are now seeking premium experiences, desiring luxury accommodations and unique local interactions, akin to how Taylor Swift fans planned their Eras tour trips.

Strategic Airline Moves

Airlines have been adding unique routes for college football games for nearly a decade. United Airlines has focused on understanding fan travel preferences, enabling them to identify high-demand games and routes appropriately. Upcoming flights include nonstop service from Oklahoma City to Jacksonville for an Oklahoma vs. University of Florida game in November.

More Than Just Football

The symbiosis between sports and travel extends beyond football season. The NFL and MLB are organizing games in international locations, including an upcoming game in Australia and the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. As consumers continue to crave unique experiences, attending live events is seen as a worthy investment.

Booking Tips for Sports Travel

  1. Plan Early: Start searching for flights and accommodations as soon as your team’s schedule is released.
  2. Flexibility Matters: Book changeable reservations to adapt to evolving plans or price drops.
  3. Consider Travel Insurance: Protect your trip against unforeseen changes or cancellations.
  4. Arrive and Depart Early: Fly in a few days before the event and leave a few days after to reduce stress and avoid inflated prices.
  5. Use Points Wisely: Research current valuations of points to ensure you’re getting the best value when booking.

With airlines capitalizing on this growing market, fans are excited for the unique travel experiences that come with supporting their favorite teams.
