ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Thousands gathered at The Dome at America’s Center to participate in the beatification of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. The event saw lights shining blue, symbolizing purity, as attendees experienced a Mass honoring Sheen with recordings of his voice resonating throughout the venue.

Charles McFarland traveled from Chicago to celebrate Sheen’s enduring legacy, sharing, “It’s extraordinary to be a part of this.” This sentiment was echoed by Germaine Braxton and her husband, John, who journeyed three hours from Owensboro, Kentucky, emphasizing the impact of Sheen’s shows, including “The Catholic Hour” and “Life Is Worth Living.” John affirmed their trip, stating, “Absolutely.”

Sheen, who passed away in 1979, was a significant figure in evangelism and is often regarded as a pioneer of televangelism, particularly through his influential 1950s series. Born in El Paso, Illinois, near Peoria, Sheen held a deep connection to the state, having served in New York later on.

Organizers estimated attendance to be around 45,000, with people traveling from nearly every U.S. state and multiple countries. One attendee, Avery Spinner, expressed enthusiasm about engaging with Sheen’s story and witnessing the shared excitement of others.

McFarland reflected on the experience, stating, “I think it will give me a chance to grow my faith to experience what is possible.” Beatification represents the initial stage in the journey toward potential sainthood.
