Pet owners on the island encouraged to vaccinate their dogs following parvovirus outbreak

Parvovirus Outbreak in Puppies on Prince Edward Island

Recently, a litter of puppies in Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.) was diagnosed with parvovirus, resulting in the unfortunate deaths of some affected pups. Dr. Wade Sweet, the veterinarian who treated the dogs, highlighted the severity of this infectious disease.

About Parvovirus

Parvovirus, commonly referred to as parvo, is a highly contagious virus that spreads through direct or indirect contact with infected feces. It can survive in the environment for extended periods, posing significant risks, especially to unvaccinated puppies with immature immune systems. Dr. Marti Hopson, an adjunct faculty member at the Atlantic Veterinary College, explained that the virus targets rapidly dividing cells, including white blood cells and other immune cells. This means that young pups are particularly susceptible.

Symptoms and Precautions

Puppy owners should be vigilant for signs of illness, including diarrhea, lethargy, and unusual behavior, and should seek veterinary care if these symptoms are present. Despite the current outbreak, Dr. Hopson noted that parvovirus occurrences are rare in P.E.I. due to herd immunity, similar to the vaccination effects seen with diseases like measles.

Dr. Sweet expressed hope that the outbreak is under control, stating there haven’t been documented cases in at least two days. Testing for parvovirus can be done at veterinary offices, with results typically available within hours.

Socialization and Vaccination

While socialization is crucial for young dogs, it’s essential for pet owners to ensure that any dogs they allow their pets to interact with are vaccinated. Pet owners like Sarah Gallant, who walks her vaccinated dog in Charlottetown, have expressed concerns about potential exposure but are following veterinary guidelines for safety.

In summary, maintaining up-to-date vaccinations is vital to protect pets against parvovirus, and vigilant monitoring for symptoms will help ensure quick response and treatment.
