City Council Supports Proposal to Expand Downtown Entertainment Districts in Mobile
MOBILE, Ala. — The Mobile City Council expressed support for a proposal to expand downtown entertainment districts during a recent meeting. However, some members raised concerns about the current enforcement of rules regarding alcohol consumption in public.
In these designated areas, patrons can take alcoholic beverages outside bars and restaurants, provided they’re in specific plastic or paper cups bearing the LoDa logo. The proposal aims to include the Regions Arena in this allowance, promoting a family-friendly atmosphere for events like concerts and performances.
Fred Rendfrey, president and CEO of the Downtown Mobile Alliance, stated, “The scene we aspire for is one where you can enjoy a drink or meal before attending a performance, keeping it safe and family-friendly.”
Additionally, the planned expansion would cover sidewalks adjacent to Spanish Plaza, although the park itself would remain excluded. Another district in downtown will slightly expand to include new developments such as a restaurant and Deerfish Distilling Co.
Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis highlighted the potential for outdoor events once the arena opens, emphasizing the importance of connecting it to nearby establishments. However, Councilman Josh Woods noted the challenge posed by individuals carrying open containers from outside the designated areas, which could undermine the district’s intent.
Cheriogotis reinforced the need for proper alcohol regulations, stating, “We don’t want it to be a BYOB party,” and emphasized supporting the local businesses within the district. Some council members called for improved enforcement of existing ordinances, insisting on designated cup usage.
Rendfrey pointed out successful measures already in place to mitigate issues, such as banning parking on Dauphin Street during ArtWalk events to prevent public drinking from cars.
The council may vote on the proposal as soon as next week.
