A new impact fund aimed at supporting creators from the Global South was launched at the Toronto Film Festival. Named The Culture Fund, it is established by Product of Culture, a media company with over a decade of experience in audience research and distribution.
The fund seeks to combine philanthropic efforts with investment, focusing not just on production but on securing distribution, audience growth, and enhancing film visibility. Starting in early 2027, it plans to release culturally significant short films and assist filmmakers in connecting with the industry.
Archana Misra Jain, the fund’s founder, highlighted the importance of understanding the target audience and how to reach them. The launch was celebrated during an event co-hosted with Women in Film, Los Angeles, aiming to honor Global South and diaspora filmmakers featured in this year’s festival lineup.
Andria Wilson Mirza from WIF emphasized the need for strategic investment in filmmaking. The fund aims to enhance the distribution ecosystem for these creators.
Product of Culture will manage the fund’s operations, drawing on its extensive background in the film industry. Additionally, the fund will support films during the ongoing awards season, contributing to audience-building and industry outreach.
