Fresh Safety Signs Erected on Teton Pass Amid Community Demand for Safer Travel – LocalNews8.com

Here’s a summary of the article regarding safety improvements on Teton Pass:

Safety Enhancements on Teton Pass

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) has started installing new safety signs along Highway 22, including “Must Stop Brake Check” signs and “No Parking” signs near critical areas. This initiative follows a troubling summer with three fatalities and numerous injuries attributed to road conditions on Teton Pass.

Jared Smith, a retired civil engineer and member of the ‘Make Teton Pass Safer’ movement, emphasized the need for improved safety measures which include better signage and driver education. He advocates for early warnings at upstream points to reroute heavy vehicles to safer alternatives like the Snake River Canyon.

New signs will replace previous ones that specifically targeted truckers, now warning “all vehicles” about sharp curves and steep grades. WYDOT is reviewing these updated signs and will continue to install more as they become available.

Additionally, WYDOT is launching the Safe Pass education program on October 1, aimed at preparing drivers, particularly those in RVs or heavy vehicles, to navigate mountain roads safely. This program requires drivers to acknowledge their understanding of safety risks before attempting to cross the pass.

Smith notes that the goal is to ensure that drivers are well-informed ahead of time to prevent potential accidents due to unawareness of the road conditions.
