Expedia Group, based in Seattle, plans to lay off 58 employees in Washington state. This decision follows a WARN letter submitted to state officials, indicating the layoffs will occur between November 21 and December 1 at their Interbay campus. Positions affected include roles in technology, product development, and corporate services—such as data scientists and software engineers.
This reduction is part of a broader restructuring at Expedia, spurred by advancements in artificial intelligence that have allowed for streamlined operations. The company had previously cut 162 positions in January and experienced significant changes in leadership, with eight vice presidents let go last month.
As a reference point, Expedia’s workforce peaked at over 25,000 in 2019 but dropped during the pandemic to around 14,800, rebounding to approximately 17,100 by the end of 2023. The trend of targeted layoffs is echoed across Washington’s tech sector, affecting major companies like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google.
