Deployment is surging across the country for distributed energy resources (DERs), such as rooftop solar panels, battery storage systems, electric vehicles, and EV charging infrastructure. These assets can benefit the electric grid and co-op consumers by managing loads during peak demand, cutting energy costs, and maintaining service during outages.

However, the integration of DERs and EV infrastructure brings new cybersecurity challenges for electric co-ops. They may have limited visibility into systems on their grid if vendors or remote operators manage them, particularly with EVs communicating with automakers’ clouds or solar developers accessing inverters.

NRECA is collaborating with Sandia National Laboratories on research funded by the Department of Energy to explore these issues and offer solutions for co-ops.

In this episode of Along Those Lines, we discuss how co-ops can navigate these emerging challenges with insights from Carter Manucy, NRECA’s senior director of cybersecurity, and Cooper Cash, vice president of IT operations for North Carolina’s Electric Cooperatives.
