Midwest Indie Duo L&J Makes Comeback to Live Performances After Extended Hiatus | Entertainment

Cedar Rapids Band L&J Returns After 15-Year Hiatus

CEDAR RAPIDS — The indie band L&J is set to make a comeback after more than 15 years away from the stage. The trio, consisting of vocalist and bassist Liz Kennedy, vocalist and guitarist Justin Kennedy, and drummer Tim Shane, is scheduled for a performance on September 26, 2026.

The Kennedys first met while studying in Iowa City and were active in the Chicago music scene before focusing on their family and moving to Kansas. Their last major work prior to this year was the album “House On The Hill,” which they began in 2007 but never completed due to life events, such as the 2008 financial crisis and raising children.

In a refreshing turn, L&J revisited their unfinished music in 2024, releasing the EP “Saturday Sessions Vol. 1” and two singles. They also released a remastered version of “House On The Hill,” featuring new mixing and re-recorded vocals from Liz, who was pregnant during the initial recording.

The band’s sound blends indie, pop, folk, and jazz, infused with the influence of their Iowa roots. The Kennedys aim to create a fresh musical landscape while also drawing on nostalgic elements from the 1990s.

“Completing unfinished business was the reignition we needed,” Justin said. Their upcoming album, featuring new songs already written, is expected to release next year.

As they prepare for their performance, L&J is eager to rekindle their musical connection with both their community and each other.
