International Students Prefer Seoul to New York, London, and Paris for Its Lively Culture and Affordable Housing – Report

Seoul’s popularity among international students has surged, with a 69% increase in enrolment over the past three years, totaling 307,500 students. The city’s vibrant culture and lower housing costs compared to traditional hubs are major draws. International students are attracted by the allure of K-pop and the cosmopolitan lifestyle Seoul offers at a more affordable price.

Housing costs contribute significantly to this trend, with average monthly rents reported at approximately 900,000 won ($660) for a studio and 600,000 won ($440) for a Korean-style boarding house. Additionally, the demographic of students choosing Seoul is shifting—now including more non-heritage students seeking valuable experiences and quality of life alongside academic prestige.

Reflecting this growing appeal, Seoul ranked first in the QS Best Student Cities rankings for 2026 and 2027.
