Gunfire in Baltimore’s Federal Hill: Two Injured, Safety Concerns Rise
BALTIMORE (WBFF) — An early morning shooting in Federal Hill left two individuals injured and raised alarm about safety in the city’s entertainment districts.
Incident Overview
At approximately 2 a.m. Sunday, Baltimore police officers patrolling Cross Street heard gunfire. They discovered two males, aged 17 and 26, who had sustained gunshot wounds. Authorities cordoned off West Cross Street and South Charles Street while they investigated the scene.
Community Reactions
Tristan Laperriere, a Federal Hill resident, expressed concern: “I feel pretty safe where I live, but hearing about violence just blocks away is unsettling.” The shooting occurred just hours before the Ravens’ home opener, yet many residents remained on edge about safety.
Daniel Cohen, another resident, highlighted the need for improvement in safety measures: “You need to feel comfortable in the city. It has so much to offer, but there are concerns.”
Nashwan Bakar echoed these sentiments, acknowledging that safety is always a concern in urban living. “It’s something any city faces. Hopefully, we can curb the violence,” he said.
Recent Trend of Violence
This incident was part of a violent 24-hour period in Baltimore, with nine individuals shot in eight separate incidents over the weekend. The shooting followed newly imposed restrictions aimed at enhancing security in popular districts like Federal Hill, an initiative that was part of a summer security effort mirroring actions taken in Fells Point.
Calls for Continued Security Initiatives
Retired Sgt. Betsy Smith suggested that the city consider reinstating the summer security initiative, depending on police staffing. “If we have an initiative that is working, we should continue it,” she stated.
Laperriere added, especially with football season underway, “I would feel safer if they brought back the initiative.”
Police Response
The Baltimore police did not comment directly on the incident but noted that they are assessing the situation and will decide on future security measures based on intelligence and resources available.
