“Doula: A True Crime” Trailer Released; Boat Rocker Studios Joins CBC Documentary Project

Exclusive: Trailer for Doula – A True Crime

Nathalie Bibeau, the filmmaker behind The Walrus and the Whistleblower, presents Doula – A True Crime, a new Canadian docuseries exploring the bizarre case of a woman who faked pregnancies. The three-part series will premiere on CBC on October 7 and focuses on Kaitlyn Braun, who, at 24, contacted over 40 doulas with a shocking story of sexual assault, claiming to be in her third trimester with a stillborn child.

Key Details

  • International Distribution: Boat Rocker Studios has acquired international rights and will showcase the series at MIPCOM Cannes next month.
  • Braun’s Charges: After questioning, doulas began to suspect Braun’s narrative, leading to her being charged with 53 criminal offenses.
  • Grassroots Movement: Following the realization of a shared experience, doulas initiated a TikTok campaign to alert authorities.

In the trailer, various doulas express the emotional turmoil caused by their experience, highlighting the complexity of Braun’s actions. The final shot features Braun welcoming the filmmaker at her door with a smile.

Insights from the Filmmaker

Bibeau shares her intent to delve deeper than the sensationalist stories that followed Braun’s case. “Kaitlyn’s deception played on empathy, and the harm it caused was real,” she explains. The documentary aims to explore the nuances of human behavior and morality that this story unveils.

Production Overview

Produced by Muse Entertainment for CBC and CBC Gem, the premiere is set for October 7 at 8 AM ET. The project is backed by exec producers Jonas Prupas and Courtney Dobbins, with oversight from Michelle McCree at CBC.
