Mark Wahlberg’s burger chain Wahlburgers has recently closed its Surfers Paradise restaurant on the Gold Coast, marking a significant reduction in its Australian presence. This closure comes during the school holidays, typically a busy period for the tourist area, and the venue is now listed as “permanently closed” on Google.
This move follows the shutdown of four other locations, including the flagship Circular Quay restaurant in Sydney, which ceased operations on July 20 after four years. A sign at the Circular Quay venue expressed gratitude to customers for their support, highlighting the pride in what they had built.
At that time, it was expected that only the Surfers Paradise and Bringelly locations would remain operational, raising concerns about the future of Wahlburgers in Australia. The franchise rights for Wahlburgers in Australia and New Zealand are held by United Cinemas, which entered external administration on July 2.
Wahlburgers started its Australian journey with the Circular Quay opening in February 2022, quickly followed by the Surfers Paradise venue in October. Founded by Mark, Donnie, and Paul Wahlberg in the U.S., the chain has now significantly scaled back its Australian footprint.
