Behind the Scenes at Studio Portaluppi: Design, Culture, and Craftsmanship — C41 Magazine

The reopening of Piero Portaluppi’s historic Milanese studio, designed in 1939, marks a shift in conservation philosophy, blending old and new without strict replication or stark contrasts. Now the headquarters of Filippo Taidelli Architecture and Studio Portaluppi, curated by Julia Koropoulos, the space emphasizes subtle integration. Notable features include a polychrome marble floor made from globally sourced pieces, and a walnut table reconstructed from original designs. Playful architectural elements, like portholes and a rediscovered air-raid shelter, enhance the studio’s character.

Scheduled for a cultural launch in autumn 2026 under the theme C’est l’heure de bien faire, this renovated space aims to foster public engagement through exhibitions, workshops, and other events, transforming the studio from a mere monument into a vibrant cultural hub. This approach highlights the importance of preserving memory through active use rather than static preservation.
