Ann Arbor Launches Sustainable Energy Utility
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Ann Arbor is introducing a new municipal utility that utilizes locally generated solar power and battery storage, providing residents an alternative clean energy option.
The Ann Arbor Sustainable Energy Utility (SEU) has begun installations in the Bryant neighborhood this year, with plans to expand across the city by 2027. This community-owned utility is designed to complement the existing electric grid.
How the Program Works
Under the SEU model, the city finances, owns, installs, and maintains solar and battery systems. Customers pay a monthly fee based on their selected system size and configuration. This solar power can lower the amount of electricity customers purchase from the traditional grid. Most customers are expected to see a reduction in their total utility bills, although actual savings will vary.
Shoshannah Lenski, executive director of the SEU, noted that residents typically save between $100 to $300 annually on their utility bills, after accounting for SEU fees. The program, approved by Ann Arbor voters in November 2024, aims to provide 100% local, renewable energy.
“We operate like a utility, owning renewable assets and offering electricity as a service to residents and businesses,” Lenski stated.
Battery Storage for Backup Power
The SEU’s solar systems come with batteries that store energy for backup power, particularly useful during grid outages. Residents gain resilience against power interruptions, maintaining essential services during outages. Kamar Ali, a local resident who enrolled due to frequent outages, expressed hope that this initiative will help avoid losing food due to power failures.
Future Expansion
Mayor Christopher Taylor announced plans to expand the program, targeting the addition of solar power in hundreds more homes by 2027, including over 1,000 installations across Ann Arbor. The SEU will also be accessible to businesses, rental properties, non-profits, and houses of worship.
Customers will only cover monthly utility bills; there is no upfront cost for the equipment.
Taylor encouraged other communities to consider similar initiatives, citing sustainable and achievable community-driven investments.
Supporting Clean Energy Goals
DTE Energy supports Ann Arbor’s clean energy goals, highlighting that the SEU would provide another option for residents and businesses to reduce their carbon emissions. This initiative aligns with DTE’s broader goals for cleaner energy investments.
Residents interested in the SEU can find more information on the city’s Sustainable Energy Utility website.
