Service dogs undergo training for air travel at Richmond International Airport.

Service Dog Training at Richmond International Airport

Richmond International Airport recently collaborated with Helping Howls to provide service dogs and their handlers the opportunity to practice navigating the airport. The training took place on a Friday, and involved the dogs moving through all areas, from the parking lot to the gate.

During the training sessions, the dogs checked in at the ticket counter, walked through the terminal, underwent TSA screenings, and waited at the gate. The goal was to familiarize the dogs with the airport’s environment, helping them handle potential distractions such as crowds, luggage, and escalators.

Serena Smalley, a dog handler from Helping Howls, emphasized the importance of preparing dogs for travel, noting that the airport setting can be overwhelming. Troy Bell, a spokesperson for the airport, highlighted how the training offers a unique experience that cannot be replicated in other environments.

Each dog in the program has a specific role; for example, Smalley’s dog, Cairo, is trained to alert her to medical episodes and perform tasks to assist her. The dogs also visited the airport’s new service animal relief areas during their training.

Bell confirmed that this adaptive training approach is ongoing, aiming to make the airport more accessible and welcoming for all travelers.
