A new solar farm, Flaxlands Solar Farm, has received planning approval from Wiltshire Council to be built near the M4, despite concerns about its impact on the countryside. This 49.9-megawatt facility will cover 87 hectares and is expected to generate enough electricity to power thousands of homes for 40 years. The project will also include a large battery energy storage system and new habitats for wildlife.
While officials noted that the benefits of renewable energy, energy security, and carbon reduction outweighed concerns regarding the visual impact and loss of farmland, there were 29 objections filed against the project. Residents expressed worries about the increase in traffic during construction and the loss of green space, suggesting alternative locations for such developments.
Supporters emphasized the importance of the solar farm in combating climate change. The project has undergone revisions to minimize its ecological impact, including the removal of solar panels from protected areas and the introduction of ecological buffers around wildlife habitats.
After 40 years, the solar farm is set to be dismantled, and the site will be restored for agricultural use.
