A Pennsylvania lawmaker is introducing legislation aimed at imposing stricter penalties for leaving pets in unattended vehicles. Currently, neglecting an animal’s basic needs, including protection from harsh weather, is already an offense in the state. State Rep. Jeanne McNeill’s bill seeks to clearly define and prohibit leaving a pet in a car when their health or well-being is at risk due to intentional, reckless, or negligent behavior.
If passed, the new law would impose a $100 fine for a first offense without serious injury. A second offense, which results in serious injury, could lead to fines up to $500, potential imprisonment of up to six months, or both. The bill has yet to be officially introduced.
