The Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii has opened applications for the upcoming Narcissus Queen Pageant, aiming to help young women connect with their heritage and develop leadership skills. Contestant Search Co-Chair Laura Ho discussed the pageant’s legacy and its ties to the Mid-Autumn Festival in Honolulu’s Chinatown.
Unlike traditional beauty pageants, this event emphasizes cultural immersion and community engagement. Contestants will participate in free classes taught by industry professionals covering various traditional arts, martial arts, lion dancing, mahjong, acupuncture, and calligraphy. These classes aim to boost confidence and personal development, allowing participants to network and form lasting friendships.
Applications are open through the end of September, with eligibility criteria including:
- Ages 19-27
- At least 25% Chinese ancestry
- Never married or given birth
- Residency in Hawaii for at least one year
