Exploring Japan Aboard Ocean Fuji
Cruising has typically not been my preferred travel style, favoring instead the spontaneous thrills of budget travel. However, my recent experience aboard Mitsui Ocean Cruises’ Ocean Fuji, sailing from Kobe to Korea’s Jeju Island, proved to be a culturally rich and immersive journey.
Unique Experiences at Sea
While many cruise lines prioritize opulence, Ocean Fuji offers an intimate experience with a capacity of just 458 guests. Japanese hospitality shines here, marked by formal dining attire and a serene atmosphere rather than a party vibe. Evenings featured live performances and relaxed gatherings, with no gamble beyond a playful family-friendly casino atmosphere.
Culinary Delights and Fusion Flavors
Drawing heavily from washoku, the traditional Japanese meal style, the ship’s dining options are impressive. I savored a sumptuous breakfast of rice, miso soup, and grilled fish, all while enjoying top-tier omotenashi, or hospitality. Notably, Hokusai Fine Dining, overseen by renowned chef Kiyomi Mikuni, offers distinct French-Japanese fusion dishes.
Cultural Immersion Onboard
The cruise doesn’t just prioritize entertainment; it infuses Japanese culture into its schedule. From rakugo storytelling to origami workshops, passengers engage in traditional crafts and performances, connecting with Japan’s artistic fabric.
Off-the-Beaten-Path Destinations
One of the cruise’s highlights was visiting Yawatahama, a quaint fishing village where the community warmly welcomed us with local cuisine and traditional performances. Other ports included Sasebo and Kochi, offering hidden gems often overlooked by typical tourists.
Rediscovering Kobe
Before embarking, I explored Kobe, a city frequently overshadowed by Osaka and Kyoto. My explorations included its vibrant Chinatown, sake breweries, and stunning local cuisine. A visit to Arima Onsen for a relaxing soak in natural hot springs rounded off my adventure in this dynamic region.
In summary, if you’re considering a cruise in Japan, Mitsui’s voyages provide a unique blend of exploration and comfort. Pairing the ease of cruising with authentic cultural experiences, it proves to be an inviting way to discover the lesser-known facets of Japanese life.
