Ed Sheeran Addresses Gaza Controversy at Philadelphia Concert

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Ed Sheeran opened his concert on Saturday with poignant remarks regarding the situation in Gaza. The shared sentiments followed a wave of controversy surrounding his tour, particularly after opening act Macklemore withdrew in support of Palestine and faced backlash for expressing pro-Palestinian views.

Sheeran took to the stage solo, without an opening act, but later shared the stage with other musicians. During his performance at Lincoln Financial Field, he emphasized his desire for his music to foster unity rather than politics. However, he condemned the attacks in Israel on October 7, 2023, deeming them horrific, and characterized the ongoing situation in Gaza as “catastrophic and unjustifiable.”

“I’ve never wanted to be an activist musician, but this has placed me in a significant debate about freedom of speech concerning a complex global issue,” Sheeran stated to a nearly full stadium.

The conflict began with Macklemore’s pro-Palestinian statement at a concert in New Jersey on September 5, which led to his removal from Sheeran’s tour, reportedly at the request of New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft. Shortly after, other supporting acts, including members of the Irish folk band Beoga, withdrew from the tour in solidarity.

A small group of pro-Palestinian protestors gathered outside the venue, expressing disappointment in Sheeran’s remarks. Concert attendee Hillary Steinberg voiced her dissatisfaction, stating, “This choice — even though he was saying that he wasn’t complicit — is a political choice.”

Conversely, another concertgoer, Diane Savitz, defended Sheeran, arguing that a concert should be a space for enjoyment rather than political discourse.

In light of the escalating turmoil, Macklemore announced a $1 million donation to Palestinian relief efforts and urged Kraft to match the donation. Both Kraft and Sheeran have reportedly agreed to contribute $2 million each, though the specifics of the allocation remain undisclosed.

Sheeran has consistently maintained that he is not responsible for the decision to drop Macklemore, asserting that the tour promoter ultimately held that authority. He further emphasized his commitment to his fans, asserting that he would never intentionally let them down or compromise his team’s livelihoods.

In a broader remark, Sheeran expressed concern about venues pre-approving performances, stating, “This happens in so many places that I perform around the world, but it should never happen in the free world.”

As the evening unfolded, Sheeran underscored inclusivity at his concerts, welcoming diverse perspectives and reinforcing that his songs are about “love, hope, and unity.”
