Complex Environment: US Issues Travel Advisory for the Middle East Due to Houthi Attacks

The United States has issued a new travel advisory for Americans in the Middle East due to escalating tensions amid Houthi missile and drone attacks directed at Saudi Arabia. The advisory emphasizes the need for heightened vigilance and preparation for potential travel disruptions, such as flight cancellations and airspace closures.

The U.S. State Department has classified the security environment as complex, warning that Iranian-backed groups may target U.S. interests abroad. Specifically, the advisory highlights ongoing hostilities involving Iranian-supported Houthis against Saudi Arabia, including attacks on civilian airports, which could escalate further.

For Americans currently in the Middle East, the State Department advises monitoring airport and airline operations closely. For Saudi Arabia, the travel status remains at Level 3—reconsider travel—due to threats from Iranian drones and missiles, armed conflict, and local laws. U.S. government employees in Saudi Arabia face tighter restrictions, including limitations on traveling near the Yemen border.

Yemen has a Level 4—do not travel—warning in place, citing terrorism, armed conflict, and kidnapping risks. Recently, the Houthis launched missiles toward various locations in Saudi Arabia, leading to emergency alerts across the kingdom, although no casualties have been reported.

In addition, a Level 3 advisory is also maintained for Israel, with warnings related to the potential threats faced by U.S. diplomatic facilities and interests.
