Celebrating the Depth of Japanese Culture in Northern Ireland

A vibrant celebration of Japanese culture took place in Northern Ireland, marking the 30th anniversary of the Japan Society in the area. The family-friendly matsuri festival featured various performances, workshops, and activities that highlighted the richness of Japanese traditions.

The Japanese Ambassador to the UK, Hiroshi Suzuki, attended the event and expressed his enthusiasm, noting the economic ties between Japan and Belfast. Suzuki often travels with a Paddington Bear toy, which he says helps him connect with people on social media.

Sean Greer, secretary of the Japan Society, emphasized the society’s role in connecting locals with Japanese culture. With increasing travel to Japan, interest in the country’s food and culture is growing in Northern Ireland.

Festival attendees, like Nicole Murray, appreciated the event’s diversity. Another participant, Junko McNeely, originally from Japan, remarked on the importance of showcasing heritage and culture, particularly for those of Japanese descent like her son, Joel, who expressed a desire to learn more about his roots.
