Surfing Heritage and Culture Center Opens New Location in Laguna Beach – Orange County Register

The newly opened Surfing Heritage and Culture Center (SHACC) in Laguna Beach transports visitors back in time to explore surfing’s rich history. Celebrated as the “Smithsonian of Surf,” this center showcases a vast collection of surfboards, vintage swimsuits, and early photography, reflecting the sport’s cultural impact.

The grand opening, marked by a ceremony and a traditional Hawaiian blessing, welcomed surf enthusiasts and dignitaries alike to a central location steps from the ocean. Executive Director Jeff Alter expressed excitement for the future of the center, highlighting its potential to grow in this public space.

With more than 12,000 square feet to exhibit, SHACC features traditional wooden boards crafted by surfing legend Duke Kahanamoku, alongside displays documenting surfing’s influence on fashion, music, and film. The center plans to foster community events and serve as an educational resource, preserving surfing’s legacy for future generations.

For those eager to visit, SHACC opens to the public with grand festivities on Saturday. Learn more about this unique destination at shacc.org.
