The 20th Asian Games were officially opened in Nagoya by Japan’s emperor amidst challenges such as logistical issues for athletes. Despite a colorful ceremony, the stadium had many empty seats. More than 11,000 athletes and 6,000 officials faced accommodation difficulties, staying in temporary huts, hotels, and even a cruise ship. The event also experienced flooding and the threat of a typhoon. Notably, there was a mix-up where North Korea’s anthem was played for South Korea’s hockey team. The Games will feature over 40 sports and offer spots for the 2028 Olympics. The first gold medal will be awarded in the men’s individual triathlon.
