El Son de Antonio Keka: Celebrating Dominican Culture in Chicago
What began as a simple gathering among friends in the Dominican Republic has evolved into a vibrant cultural celebration, El Son de Antonio Keka. Named after Jose Antonio Rodriguez, affectionately known as Antonio Keka, this event pays homage to the Dominican tradition of Son music.
A Growing Tradition
Mercedes Feliz-Matos, founder of the Next Chapter Culture Foundation, shares the story of the tradition that started with Keka hosting friends to enjoy Son music at his home. This gathering has now transformed into a significant cultural event, celebrated every Sunday in Santiago, Dominican Republic, drawing crowds together to celebrate music, dance, and community.
Bringing Culture to Chicago
Feliz-Matos is dedicated to sharing Dominican heritage in Chicago, notably through the Dominican Culture Street Celebration. This year, she highlights El Son de Antonio Keka, providing a glimpse of Dominican culture to the local audience. The event showcases the joy and communal spirit that Keka fostered.
The Heart of Son Music
Antonio Keka’s legacy continues through his son, Leonardo Rodriguez, who, along with a talented team of dancers, brings this cherished tradition to the Copernicus Center in Jefferson Park. Rodriguez emphasizes the essence of the event: “It’s the joy of going out, sharing that experience with friends and other people.”
A Celebration of Heritage
Dressed in traditional attire, dancers embody the vibrant culture of the Dominican Republic. Feliz-Matos hopes that this celebration allows everyone, regardless of background, to connect with the spirit of the island: “We’re trying to bring one piece of the island, one event at a time, to Chicago.”
