Crew Reports ‘Disgusting’ Smell Spreading Through Cabin and Invading Cockpit on Air Canada Flight

NEED TO KNOW

  • An Air Canada flight from Washington D.C. to Montreal experienced a strong odor 25 minutes after takeoff.
  • The smell, suspected to be from a waste leak, spread from the cabin to the cockpit during the flight.
  • Maintenance teams were expected to inspect the five-year-old aircraft upon landing in Montreal to determine the source.

Passengers and crew aboard an Air Canada flight on Friday, Sept. 18, got an unexpected surprise during their journey.

Flight AC8822, operated by Jazz Aviation, was traveling from Washington D.C. to Montreal when a pungent aroma was reported by the flight crew 25 minutes into the flight.

While the plane was over Philadelphia, the cabin crew noted a suspected lavatory or waste leak, with the odor reaching the cockpit.

The aircraft had previously completed a route from Toronto earlier in the day, but it remains unclear whether the issue originated from that flight or on the current journey to Montreal.

Twenty minutes later, the smell intensified to a “nauseating” level, prompting further alerts from the crew.

The flight lasted one hour and 46 minutes, landing in Montreal around 11:45 a.m. local time. Maintenance teams are scheduled to inspect the regional jet upon arrival at the Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport.
