Nagoya Asian Games Update
NAGOYA – During a press conference on Friday, Mohammad Tayyab Ikram, Chairman of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games Coordination Committee, addressed concerns regarding accommodations for athletes. He assured attendees that all facility allocations have been completed, emphasizing that every athlete and participant has suitable lodging.
The Games, which kick off Saturday, will not feature a dedicated athletes’ village as a cost-saving measure. Instead, athletes will reside on a cruise ship at Garden Pier in Nagoya, as well as in container-style accommodations and hotels. Ikram urged skeptics to visit these facilities to witness their quality firsthand.
Ikram explained the strategy is to avoid creating an unused legacy after the Games. He described the discussions surrounding these arrangements as complex but ultimately yielding “unique alternatives” that have been positively received.
In organizational news, new sports like teqball and padel have been incorporated into the program, increasing the athlete count from 15,000 to over 17,000. OCA Director General Husain A.H.Z. Al-Musallam noted the importance of allowing all athletes the opportunity to compete, especially amid global political tensions, underscoring the unifying power of sport.
