IG Report: California High-Speed Rail Spent Over $1 Million on Travel Expenses

The High-Speed Rail Authority has come under scrutiny for over $1 million in unjustified travel expenses for contractors, as revealed in an investigative report from the Office of the Inspector General. This investigation highlighted that between 2024-2026, $680,500 was paid for travel without prior approval, often accompanied by vague justifications. Additional disallowed expenses totaling $543,400 were identified, including luxury travel and unrelated activities.

California lawmakers responded strongly, calling for reimbursement to the authority. Senators expressed their frustration with the mismanagement of funds, with one suggesting that the High-Speed Rail project should have its funding completely cut off due to ongoing wasteful spending.

Recommendations from the report include stricter enforcement of travel regulations and updating travel policies. The High-Speed Rail Authority stated it is committed to improving oversight and rectifying the identified issues.

The High-Speed Rail project, initially projected to cost $126.2 billion, has faced criticism for its delays and spending, with the completion timeline pushed beyond the original 2020 target and no track laid as of June 2025.
