Binghamton University Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WBNG) — Hispanic Heritage Month is in full swing at Binghamton University, with students engaging in meaningful cultural exchanges.

On Wednesday evening, the Multicultural Resource Center held a culture chat focused on Hispanic culture and hip-hop, fostering a space for dialogue among students. Kanan Distant, a student manager at the center, emphasized the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout campus.

Distant remarked, “We are part of the DEI department, and so it’s important to celebrate inclusion, equality, and diversity throughout campus. This is just one of the ways to do it.” He highlighted the relevance of these discussions, especially in light of current societal struggles.

The conversation revolved around the Cornell Hip-Hop Collection and discussed hip-hop’s influence on Latin American and Hispanic culture, encouraging students to explore unfamiliar aspects of these traditions.

“To shine light on different heritages and cultures is crucial—not just to show gratitude for their origins but also to uncover lesser-known elements,” Distant added.

The aim of these discussions is to create an open environment for learning and inquiry, where attendees can gain new perspectives on various cultures. The Multicultural Resource Center plans to continue these conversations throughout Hispanic Heritage Month.
