Bobcat Killed After Attacking Dog and Owner
Location: Pine, Arizona
A Pine homeowner shot and killed a wild bobcat on August 29 after the animal attacked his dog and aggressively charged at his wife. Wildlife officials later confirmed that the bobcat tested positive for rabies, raising concerns about rabid wildlife in Gila County and Arizona.
Incident Details
The attack began when the bobcat entered the homeowner’s backyard and mauled their dog. Upon hearing the commotion, the family went to investigate and found their dog injured. The bobcat remained in the yard, snarling and threatening the homeowner’s wife.
In response, the homeowner retrieved a firearm and shot the bobcat. Following the incident, he contacted the Arizona Game and Fish Department to report what had happened and to have the animal retrieved for testing.
Official Statements
Game and Fish officers took the carcass for rabies testing, which returned positive. Alexandra Flickinger, a spokesperson for the department, emphasized the importance of monitoring rabies cases in Arizona, as the virus is notably fatal once symptoms appear.
Officials encourage pet owners to keep vaccinations up to date and advise immediate medical attention for any bites or scratches from wild animals, especially bobcats.
Public Health Note
Rabies is endemic in Arizona, primarily affecting bats, skunks, and foxes. Residents are urged to report any wild animals displaying unusual or aggressive behavior.
