Experience Korean Culture for Free During Chuseok
As Chuseok approaches, cultural venues in Seoul are gearing up for an extended holiday filled with traditional programs for families and friends to enjoy together. This year, Chuseok runs from September 24 to 26, extending to September 27. While many attractions will close on the 25th (Chuseok Day), they remain open on the other days with a variety of free activities.
National Museum of Korea
The National Museum of Korea in Yongsan will host “The Art Spot Series” performance concerts on September 24, 26, and 27, featuring traditional music. Established in 2018, this series showcases Korea’s performing arts, with performances by artists like Gyeol Korean Traditional Orchestra, GamulGwangdae, and Pansori singer Kim Junsu.
National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art
The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art will have free admission across all its branches throughout the holiday, except for the Seoul branch on the 25th. On display will be exhibitions celebrating the museum’s anniversary and artworks from Suh Do-ho. An Instagram event encourages visitors to share their experiences online.
National Folk Museum of Korea
Located near Gyeongbokgung Palace, the National Folk Museum will be closed on Chuseok but will host the “All Together for Hangawi” program on other days. This program features traditional games like ssireum, jegichagi, and ganggangsullae, alongside cultural activities that engage visitors in Chuseok customs.
Palaces and Korean Folk Village
Seoul’s four ancient palaces (Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Deoksugung, and Changgyeonggung), along with Jongmyo Shrine and the Royal Tombs of Joseon, will remain open during the holiday. Notably, Jongmyo will welcome general viewings with free entry. The Korean Folk Village in Yongin will also operate, offering visitors insights into traditional Chuseok customs, including performances and hands-on experiences like making songpyeon rice cakes.
