Washington County Enhances Dog Licensing with New Digital System

Changes to Dog Licensing in Washington County

HILLSBORO, Ore. (KATU) — Dog owners in Washington County will soon experience a new way to license their pets. Washington County Animal Services has partnered with DocuPet, a North American pet registration and lost pet recovery service, to introduce a modernized dog licensing system.

Key Updates

  • Communication: Residents will receive an email or letter from DocuPet around September 15 detailing the changes.

  • Unique Tags: Each new license will come with a unique DocuPet tag linked to a secure online profile for each dog. If a pet goes missing, anyone who finds it can use the tag’s code to quickly inform DocuPet’s 24/7 dispatch team, facilitating the return of lost pets.

  • Personalization: Owners will now be able to personalize their dog’s tag, a feature not previously offered.

Official Statement

Randy Covey, Animal Services Manager, expressed enthusiasm about the new system, stating, “This platform makes licensing easier for dog owners while providing added protection for their pets.”

Licensing Requirements

  • Mandatory Licensing: All dogs in Washington County must be licensed, and failure to comply could lead to a $160 citation.

  • Discounts: Discounts are available for multi-year licenses, spayed or neutered dogs, and for owners 65 and older with spayed or neutered dogs. A current rabies vaccination proof is required to obtain a license.

  • Funding Animal Services: Revenue from licensing supports various animal services, including investigations of neglect and abuse, response to dog bites, and care for strays or injured animals.

Renewal Information

Pet owners who renew an expired license before the end of October will not incur a late fee.

Location

Washington County Animal Services and the Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter can be found at 1901 SE 24th Avenue, Hillsboro, adjacent to Lowe’s and Home Depot.
