Soap, Sanders, and Clouse Families Prepared for the Cherokee National Holiday Powwow | Cultural Insights

Cherishing Family Bonds Through Powwow Traditions

TAHLEQUAH – The Soap, Sanders, and Clouse families from Rocky Ford, Oklahoma, exemplify the spirit of unity and tradition through their involvement in the annual Cherokee National Holiday powwow. With a total of nine children participating, the powwow experience becomes a vibrant family celebration.

Preparing for the Powwow

Getting ready for the powwow is a collective effort. Mom Amber Clouse shared that after their kids attended a Cherokee Nation powwow in their youth, it was clear they were captivated by the culture. “They began showing interest in dancing alongside us, and eventually, they were mentored by experienced dancers,” she explained.

Mentorship in Powwow Etiquette

New dancers are welcomed into the circle by families or seasoned dancers, who guide them in the nuances of powwow culture. This mentorship fosters a sense of community and belonging among participants.

Expressing Culture and Tribute

Each dancer brings their unique flair to the powwow. For instance, Ashlynn Soap, who has been dancing for six years, performs the jingle dress dance. She emphasizes the significance of her art by stating, “I dance for those who can’t dance. It represents healing for those who are sick.”

Rylee Clouse, another participant, agrees, mentioning, “You just have to be confident in yourself,” highlighting the importance of self-assurance while performing.

Fashioning the Regalia

Much of the dancers’ regalia is handmade by Amber and her sisters, showcasing intricate beadwork and vibrant designs. Each piece not only reflects personal style but also symbolizes their heritage and the stories behind the dances.

Family’s Joy in Togetherness

The families cherish each moment spent together at the powwow. Daylen Clouse expressed his joy, noting the blessing of seeing all the kids perform. “It’s a blessing. We stick together. We’re pretty strong all together,” he said, highlighting their tight-knit family dynamic.

As the children, from the tiniest tots to seasoned dancers, showcase their skills, they reinforce family ties and celebrate their cultural heritage, embodying the essence of the Cherokee community during the powwow festivities.
