The New Lenox Village Board is considering new ordinances to allow security devices in businesses, particularly those with video gaming licenses. Mayor Tim Baldermann mentioned that a temporary ban on such devices was initially imposed to prevent unattractive security measures. However, given a rise in burglaries targeting businesses with gaming machines, he now supports allowing businesses to install these devices, offering no-interest loans to help.
The urgency stems from 13 reported burglaries in New Lenox this year, including several recent smash-and-grab incidents. Baldermann emphasized that while businesses must derive at least 50% of revenue from non-gaming sources, many rely on video gaming for survival.
In addition, the board approved an agreement with Will County to install automated license plate readers for enhanced public safety. There are assurances of transparency regarding the use of these cameras, addressing potential privacy concerns.
The ordinances will be voted on in the next board meeting on September 28 at 7 p.m. at New Lenox Village Hall.
