The Magic of “Water for Elephants” at the Pantages Theatre
A vibrant theme of escapism is at the core of the Tony-nominated musical “Water for Elephants,” a celebration of the wonders of the circus. As the crew prepares for opening night at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre, a blend of acrobats and actors brings their unique talents to the stage, warming up with a dazzling display of stretching, tumbling, and juggling.
A standout feature in this production is the introduction of a new Chinese pole, a nearly 20-foot-high cylinder that the performers will climb and defy gravity upon. While it won’t make its debut for a couple of weeks, the anticipation adds an exciting layer to the already dynamic performances.
The ensemble exhibits a delightful nonchalance as they prepare for an audience poised to be amazed. Among them is Serafina Walker, an actor and acrobat, who also serves as circus captain. She has spent years training in gymnastics and circus arts, and she emphasizes the electric connection between the performers and the audience, which invigorates their stage presence.
Summer Severin is also notable for her versatility; she not only performs but also serves as dance captain while understudying the lead role of Marlena. She reflects on her rapid adaptation to circus skills, from trapeze work to acrobatics, showcasing her ability to transcend her dance background.
The show’s choreography is a seamless blend of circus and theatricality, thanks to co-choreographers Jesse Robb and Shana Carroll, who combine their distinct skills to create an immersive experience. Their collaborative spirit embodies the very essence of a traveling circus.
“Water for Elephants” tells a poignant story of love and survival against the backdrop of the Great Depression. The tale follows Jacob Jankowski, who, after losing his parents, joins a circus and becomes entwined in a love triangle involving the ringmaster’s wife, all while caring for a stubborn elephant.
Having been adapted into a musical after a film version in 2011, “Water for Elephants” now shines brightly on stage, with its first national tour running through the Pantages Theatre until September 27, before heading to the Segerstrom Center for the Arts later this fall.
As the performers prepare to captivate their audience, the camaraderie and trust they place in one another ensure a thrilling yet safe experience. In the world of “Water for Elephants,” there’s a shared understanding that the magic of the circus lives on, infused with joy and artistry that transcends mere performance.
