United in Diversity: Fiestas Patrias Showcases Latinx Pride – The Battalion

Fiestas Patrias Celebrates Diversity in Bryan-College Station

Fiestas Patrias brought life and vibrancy to historic downtown Bryan from September 4-13, 2026. This annual event, founded by Roy Lopez ‘82 and his father, Emilio Lopez, in 1992, has grown to celebrate the rich Hispanic and Latinx cultures within the Bryan-College Station community. The festival aims to promote unity and representation among the area’s diverse populations.

Lopez reflected on the event’s progression: “When I started this off back in 1992…there were a lot of Hispanics here. But now, in the year of 2026, it expands.” The theme of the festival, “many cultures and one community,” underscores its mission to unite various cultures and educate attendees about their traditions.

Local Latinx-owned businesses played a significant role during the festivities. Sarah Rodriguez, General Manager of La Familia Taqueria, expressed her excitement in participating, emphasizing the importance of connecting with the community. “We’re just excited to showcase some of our food,” she said, highlighting the outreach and exposure that Fiestas Patrias provides to local businesses.

Jessica Garcia Marquez, owner of Garcia’s Deli Delicious, shared her hope that the event would increase her business’s visibility. Meanwhile, local schools like Rudder High School and Bryan High School also participated, with the Rangerettes and mariachi band contributing to the cultural celebration.

Morgan Van Dresar, Rangerettes director, noted the importance of cultural education for students: “I think it’s teaching children…what it means to be a citizen.” Similarly, the mariachi band director, James Mosqueda, expressed pride in showcasing the cultural talents of the community.

Community involvement was evident, with a significant turnout for the parade, demonstrating a collective embrace of Latinx culture and heritage. “We all have our different cultures,” Mosqueda remarked, emphasizing the need for equal celebration of all.

As Fiestas Patrias grows, Lopez hopes the legacy he and his father created will be passed down to future generations. “I just hope and pray that the legacy of my dad and I…continues,” he said, envisioning a future where his grandson can proudly carry on the tradition.

This festival remains a vital celebration of diversity and cultural pride in the Bryan-College Station area, marking its significance for the community.
