UNF Department Launches MOCA Exhibit Showcasing 14-Year Voces y Caras Cultural Initiative

The Voces y Caras project, led by University of North Florida professor Constanza López Baquero, has been capturing the essence of the Latinx community for 14 years. Initiated in 2012 after her relocation to Jacksonville, the project has amassed over 200 interviews with community members, including doctors, business owners, and immigrants. The recordings serve as a narrative bridge, allowing students to find connections in shared histories.

This significant initiative has recently transitioned from the university campus to the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville, where it will be showcased until September 21. Historically, the project observed Hispanic Heritage Month with exhibitions at various university locations.

The project features works by Cuban-American artist Ricder Ricardo, whose pieces accompany the interview archive, presenting a visual narrative alongside the audio stories collected.

Goals of the Project:

  1. Acknowledge the contributions of immigrants to the community.
  2. Connect heritage Spanish speakers to their cultural roots.
  3. Enable students to see reflections of themselves in the stories shared.
  4. Foster community, both academically and socially.

López Baquero’s interactive teaching approach encourages students to pursue their interests, resulting in diverse research topics. Participatory activities, including theater exercises, help students develop comfort in public speaking, essential for podcast recording.

Students, such as Yadhira González and Alma Cruz, highlight how the project not only enhances their research and communication skills but also builds a community among peers. Their participation in the UNF Student Research Symposium allows them to present their findings and engage with wider academic discourses.

The MOCA exhibit features a recording studio for visitors to share their own stories, emphasizing the project’s community focus. Attendees, such as Daisy Miranda, express appreciation for the inclusion of varied voices, including marginalized groups.

López Baquero views the exhibit as a unifying experience for the Latinx community, celebrating shared stories and connections. The Voces y Caras exhibit exemplifies the project’s impact, remaining significant beyond academic walls through its ability to foster understanding and connection within the community.
