BlizzCon Returns to Anaheim, Offering Gamers a ‘Sanctuary’ – Orange County Register

BlizzCon 2026 Returns to Anaheim After Three Years

Thousands of gamers, cosplayers, and enthusiasts gathered in Anaheim on Saturday, September 12, for the first time in three years to participate in BlizzCon 2026. This two-day event showcases popular Blizzard Entertainment franchises such as Diablo, Hearthstone, Overwatch, StarCraft, and World of Warcraft, offering fans sneak peeks at new releases, competitive gameplay, celebrity panels, and interactive experiences at the Anaheim Convention Center.

A Special Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony was marked by a packed arena and featured remarks from Johanna Faries, president of Blizzard Entertainment, who took the helm in 2024. Faries expressed her gratitude to the fans, emphasizing the importance of community and shared joy, particularly in challenging times.

“The journey of dreaming bigger and pushing what’s possible makes events like BlizzCon significant,” she stated, highlighting the convention as an “oasis” for gamers.

Global Excitement

In addition to the thousands present, many more watched the live streams on platforms like YouTube and Twitch, indicating the global reach of the event. This BlizzCon is particularly notable as it is the first since Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard for $69 billion in 2023, marking a new era for the gaming giant.

Attendees explored the convention halls transformed into immersive environments featuring hands-on gameplay, competitive matches, and extensive merchandise options. Outside, fans cosplayed as their favorite characters, amplifying the vibrant atmosphere.

Fan Reflections

Attendees expressed excitement and nostalgia. Tristan Mercier, who traveled from Quebec, shared that the event was his first gaming convention. As a longtime Blizzard fan and current employee, he considered attending BlizzCon essential. “I just kind of had to be here,” he said, reflecting on his lifelong connection to games like Diablo.

Tanner Bruch, from Minneapolis, also attended for the first time, eager to meet friends from online gaming. “Getting to be able to finally meet them… I love seeing people in their element,” he remarked.

Longtime attendee Lori Quinonez, who has participated in almost every BlizzCon, saw the event as a celebration of gaming rather than just a platform for announcements. “It’s all about the gaming,” she remarked, excited for previews while preferring to experience surprises at release.

The Meaning of Community

Faries reiterated the importance of community, aiming for BlizzCon to serve as a sacred space for making lasting connections and fostering joy. Her hope is that attendees continue to cherish these shared moments, embodying why such community gatherings matter.

As the weekend continues, BlizzCon 2026 encapsulates the spirit of gaming culture, bringing people together in celebration and connection.
