EMS Memorial Bike Ride Raises Awareness in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh — Over 40 cyclists made the challenging 140-mile journey from Johnstown to Pittsburgh, raising awareness for the sacrifices made by emergency medical services (EMS) personnel. The event, organized by the National EMS Memorial Bike Ride, culminated at Allegheny General Hospital at 9 a.m. on Monday, where participants visited before proceeding to Heinz Chapel for a memorial service.

“The ride commemorates those who have fallen before us, whether due to emergencies on duty or illness,” said Nico Soler from Allegheny General Hospital.

For some riders, the journey was both physically demanding and emotionally significant. Liz Cethner shared, “Sometimes the uphill, I really had to push myself and think of why we were doing this and all the people who have lost their lives in the line of duty just to get me up the hills.”

This year’s ride held extra meaning as it marked 25 years since the 9/11 attacks. Scott Newton, a veteran in EMS for 38 years, emphasized the importance of connecting with the community, stating, “Us going out and spending time and honoring them is so important.”

This event marked the 11th anniversary of the ride and its second occurrence in Pittsburgh.
