Energy Department initiates program to address mining job shortages and fulfill U.S. lithium demand – WSOC TV

Overview of the Albemarle Lithium Mine Initiative in Kings Mountain, N.C.

KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. — A North Carolina lithium mine is seeking hundreds of skilled workers for its reopening, prompting the Department of Energy to announce a new educational initiative aimed at training personnel for the mining sector.

Importance of Lithium

Lithium is essential for various technologies, such as smartphones and laptops. Presently, the U.S. predominantly relies on imports for this critical mineral, despite having domestic sources.

Historical Context

The Albemarle mine in Kings Mountain was an active lithium producer decades ago but ceased operations due to unprofitability. Albemarle acquired the mine in 2015 and is now making efforts to revive it. The mine has recently drained water from its pits and is preparing for further exploration.

Workforce Needs

Scott Hutchins, Albemarle’s senior director of business readiness, highlights that much of the mine has been untouched for 40 years and emphasizes the need for a trained workforce as extraction approaches. Current local expertise in geologists, engineers, and metallurgists is limited, prompting a push for educational development in these fields.

Educational Initiative

The Department of Energy’s Prospect initiative aims to address the shortage of mining professionals by increasing funding for mining programs. The DOE announced an initial funding round of $16 million to support the establishment of such degrees, with hopes to double the number of graduates in two years.

Future Prospects

The Kings Mountain mine plans to employ 300 to 400 workers post-reopening. Albemarle has also partnered with Caterpillar to aim for zero-emissions mining operations in North America. The DOE is encouraging local educational institutions to develop relevant programs to create a pipeline of talent for these critical careers.

This initiative not only aims to bolster the local economy but also seeks to establish the U.S. as a stronger player in the global lithium market, alleviating dependency on foreign sources.
