Nippon Life Announces $12.75 Billion Investment in the U.S. — Channel NewsAsia

Japanese insurer Nippon Life Insurance plans to invest approximately 2 trillion yen (around $12.75 billion) in U.S. infrastructure financing, particularly focusing on data center construction projects. This investment is set to be executed through project financing mechanisms, where loans are repaid using the project’s own cash flow. Nippon Life finds the U.S. investments attractive due to an average spread exceeding 2% and opportunities for diversification.

In Japan, the company is planning similar investments in data center projects, aiming to double its outstanding loans to 2 trillion yen by FY2035. Historically, Japanese firms have sought opportunities overseas due to lackluster domestic growth. However, rising inflation, higher interest rates, and growing prospects in data centers and logistics are making local investments more appealing.
