The Bradford Council’s decision to reallocate £400,000 from culture funding to reopen the Sugden End tip has sparked a debate among councillors. While the plan, approved by the Reform-led cabinet, received local support, concerns emerged regarding the funding’s impact on arts and culture.
Bingley Labour councillor Susan Fricker requested a review of the decision through the scrutiny committee, emphasizing the importance of the funding for local events and community pride. She asserted that the cuts could adversely affect local businesses and the creative sector, criticizing the executive for neglecting alternative funding options and failing to consider the community impact.
Councillor Imran Khan also called for alternative funding methods for the tip, suggesting it shouldn’t come at the expense of arts funding. In contrast, Council leader Stephen Place defended the tip’s reopening as beneficial for Keighley residents, supported by conservative councillors prioritizing essential services over cultural expenditures.
A discussion will take place in the scrutiny committee on Tuesday, allowing cross-party engagement before the executive’s decision is upheld or reconsidered.
