Rochester Public Library Features Original Creations by Local Artist James Belcher

Rochester Public Library Art Exhibit

The Rochester Public Library is excited to showcase the works of James Belcher, a talented artist from New Hampshire, throughout the month of September on the First Floor.

Artist’s Statement

James Belcher finds inspiration in New England landscapes, particularly in the natural beauty of central New Hampshire. He captures the serene essence of this region in his oil paintings, aiming to evoke a sense of well-being and peace in viewers.

Belcher elaborates on his creative process:

  • He starts by observing various landscapes and seeks out striking compositions, which he captures with his camera.
  • Each piece takes about a month to complete in his home studio, where he prefers working with oil paint and pen and ink due to the control they allow.
  • His artistic journey spans over 50 years, complemented by a formal background, including a B.S. from Suffolk University and a Master of Education from Harvard University.

Contributions to Art and History

  • In 1987, James opened an art gallery within a cooperative at the Lowell National Historic Park.
  • In 1995, he developed a farm museum for the Meredith Historical Society, highlighting the agricultural history of the area.
  • He also created a calendar illustrating historic buildings for the Laconia Historical Society and Museum.

Now retired, he dedicates more time to his art while cherishing moments with his seven grandchildren.
