Hawaii Tourism Conference Focuses on Crisis Response Amid Hurricane Threat
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – About 700 representatives from Hawaii’s visitor industry came together at the Hilton Hawaiian Village for the annual Hawaii Tourism Conference, attended by 55 vendors. The conference centered on crucial topics such as crisis response, traveler safety, and preparation for future challenges facing the tourism sector.
With Hurricane Nolo approaching, Hawaii News Now inquired about how tourism leaders prepare when severe weather disrupts travel. Past storms have highlighted how quickly disruptions can impact visitors. For instance, power outages at Lihue Airport have led to long TSA lines and significant delays.
Daniel Chun, managing director of public affairs for Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines, mentioned that extra flights were added to assist travelers departing Kauai during these crises, particularly when airport security was impacted.
State officials emphasized the importance of maintaining tourism while ensuring the safety of both residents and visitors during severe weather. James Tokioka, director of the state’s Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism, noted that emergency plans are continually updated as storms develop, especially during an El Niño year.
These plans involve reserving hotel rooms for stranded travelers, providing grants to support small businesses, and redirecting visitors from hard-hit areas. Governor Josh Green addressed the balance between accommodating visitors and urging understanding during tough times, noting the unique challenges posed by Hawaii’s geography.
As Hawaii braces for Hurricane Nolo, tourism officials stress that the industry’s ability to manage disruptions is essential for ensuring visitor safety while also supporting local communities.
