Darlington County Council dismisses suggested 9-month ban on solar and wind initiatives.

Darlington County Rejects Solar and Wind Energy Moratorium

Darlington County leaders have opted against a nine-month moratorium on new solar and wind energy projects. The County Council voted 5-3 to maintain the existing rules after a public hearing where residents expressed mixed opinions.

The decision allows a proposed 417-acre solar project by Stripe Solar LLC to proceed through the planning process, amidst concerns from property owners worried about potential new regulations impacting their leases. Property owners emphasize that the project is crucial not just financially, but also for preserving family land across generations.

However, opposition arose from residents who believe the current regulations—as projects must be at least 50 feet from property lines and 200 feet from homes—are insufficient. Concerns were raised regarding property values, wildlife disruption, and the rural character of the Kellytown community.

Council members also had differing views. While some expressed concern about community division caused by the project, others supported the existing regulations. Proponents of solar energy, like resident Charlotte Edwards, argue for its importance in the future and advocate for property owners’ rights to decide how to use their land.

With the moratorium rejected, current regulations remain, allowing Stripe Solar to continue with its plans, as the county currently has over 30 solar developments in various stages of planning or negotiation.
