AEW’s MVP Reflects on Pro Wrestling’s ‘Drug Culture,’ Claims He Steered Clear of It

Pro wrestling has a long history intertwined with substance abuse issues, often stemming from the pressures wrestlers face due to injuries and the desire to maintain performance and visibility in the industry. During MVP’s time in WWE, the organization began taking its Wellness Policy more seriously, especially after the tragic Benoit incident.

MVP reflected on the rampant drug culture in the locker room, recalling how many wrestlers used muscle relaxers and pain pills not just for injuries, but also for recreational purposes. He noted that acceptance within the locker room often hinged on participating in this culture, which ultimately had devastating consequences for many wrestlers he knew.

After serving time in prison, MVP emphasized that he had no reservations about rejecting drugs, and he observed that the introduction of the Wellness Program significantly curtailed the prevalence of substance abuse in WWE. This shift marked a critical change in the industry, contributing to a healthier environment for wrestlers.
