Groupe GPA aims to enhance aluminium recovery through closed-loop recycling in the automotive sector.

Groupe GPA Expands Automotive Recycling Strategy

Introduction
French vehicle recycler Groupe GPA is broadening its automotive recycling initiatives, aiming to recover a variety of materials from end-of-life vehicles, transcending traditional parts reuse.

Innovative R&D Efforts

  • Expanded Focus: The company is now set to recover not just parts but also aluminium, rare earth elements, copper, plastics, glass, and batteries.
  • Dedicated Team: GPA has established a specialized five-person R&D team, led by mechanical engineer Marc Jolivet, tasked with developing efficient processes for transforming recovered materials into secondary raw materials for the automotive industry.

Priorities in Sustainability:

  1. Material Value Extraction: Increasing efficiency in material recovery to meet rising demand.
  2. Closed-Loop Systems: Collaborating with automotive manufacturers to establish comprehensive recycling systems.
  3. Safety in Treatment: Providing safe methods for treating materials, particularly from electric vehicles.

Urban Mining Perspective
GPA’s Johan Renaud describes end-of-life vehicles as an “urban mine,” emphasizing the potential for these vehicles in supporting resource security and decarbonization through traceable material supply chains.

Aluminium Recovery: Leading the Way

Current Projects

  • Partnership with SOREMO: GPA collaborates with aluminium specialist SOREMO, supplying 20 to 30 tonnes of engine blocks each month for high-quality aluminium recovery, with plans to ramp this up based on annual vehicle collection volumes.
  • Projected Outcomes: Estimate indicates potential production of 100 tonnes of aluminium monthly, potentially increasing to 140 tonnes by 2029.

Environmental Impact
GPA emphasizes the carbon-reducing benefits of recycled aluminium as part of automakers’ efforts to cut down the environmental footprint linked with vehicle production.

Expanding the Recovery Scope

Beyond Aluminium
GPA is enhancing its R&D programs to include:

  • Rare Earth Elements: Initial tests set for 2025, with ongoing discussions with potential partners.
  • Other Materials: Investigating recovery techniques for polypropylene, polyamide, polyurethane, copper, and automotive glass.

Conclusion

Groupe GPA aims to redefine automotive recycling by making dismantled vehicles a sustainable source of materials for production. With its R&D initiatives, the company seeks to push sustainability goals and facilitate a shift from dismantling to effective material recovery, strategically positioning itself as a leader in the evolving circular economy within the automotive sector.
