Nintendo Switch 2’s Docked VRR Support: A Game-Changer or a Missed Opportunity?
When the Nintendo Switch 2 was released, anticipation around its display capabilities included hopes for Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support while docked. Initially, Nintendo hinted at this feature but later clarified it would be limited to handheld mode. However, 16 months post-launch, docked VRR is now a reality thanks to system update 23.0.0.
The Limitation
Despite this advancement, the VRR feature comes with a significant catch: it operates on a whitelist system. Unlike the PlayStation 5, which allows VRR at the system level even for games without explicit support, the Switch 2 requires developers to activate VRR individually for each game. Currently, only one game, Nintendo’s Switch 2 Welcome Tour, is included on this whitelist.
This restriction severely limits VRR’s practical application, especially for titles that would benefit from smoother performance, such as Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition.
Understanding VRR
For those unfamiliar, VRR allows a monitor or TV to synchronize its refresh rate dynamically with a game’s frame rate, reducing screen tearing and enhancing the overall visual experience. This is particularly beneficial in games with fluctuating performance, a common scenario in many modern titles.
The Competitive Landscape
The Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 have supported VRR since their respective launches, and the feature is becoming increasingly standard in modern TVs. Given this context, the limitation of the Switch 2’s VRR feature could make it less attractive for gamers seeking seamless gameplay experiences.
Recent Nintendo News
In addition to the VRR update, Nintendo has been busy with announcements celebrating the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda, including a remake of Ocarina of Time. A subsequent Direct featured new titles such as Metroid Ravenous and Kirby and the World Beyond, as well as new editions of existing Switch games.
