Hazmat Teams Work to Rescue Pets Following Ricin Contamination

Ricin Exposure Forces Evacuation at Tyden Lofts, Pets Left Behind

HASTINGS, Mich. (WOOD) — Tyden Lofts has been almost completely evacuated since Thursday night due to ricin detection within the building.

Residents report that in the chaos of the evacuation, many were unable to take their pets with them, leaving some animals trapped inside. Tenants are now urging officials for a speedy reunification with their furry companions.

Evacuated Residents Advocate for Their Pets

“On Friday, we received an email saying we would be reunited with our animals and that officials would retrieve important items from our apartments, but we never got that phone call,” shared Madisen Frye, a resident who had to leave her two cats, Finley and Duke, behind.

Frye, who has owned her cats for over seven years, expressed her frustration about not having time to grab them during the hurried evacuation. Following the stressful experience, she organized a protest on social media and eventually got her pets back.

Ongoing Efforts to Rescue Stranded Animals

Despite delays in the rescue operations, residents were finally allowed to voice their concerns to city officials. As a result, response teams were mobilized once more to retrieve pets left behind. The Barry-Eaton District Health Department stated they are working diligently to retrieve animals, yet residents are frustrated that protests were necessary to prompt action.

Frye encouraged other tenants with pets to take action to ensure their animals are brought home safely. Emily Watson, another resident, expressed her anxiety while waiting for rescue teams. They successfully retrieved her hamster, Theodore, though her two cats remained unaccounted for, possibly hiding.

Challenges for Residents After Evacuation

Watson, who finds herself unable to return home, expressed uncertainty about her immediate future and where she and her boyfriend might stay, given the lack of available hotel accommodations due to the situation.

As of Saturday evening, updates indicated that environmental tests were being conducted to assess the need for further cleanup, with no clear timeline for when residents can return home or retrieve their belongings and pets.
